The Elmo Howell Scholarship
Established in 1999 for a recipient from Itawamba County, Mississippi majoring in Southern history or Southern literature, the Elmo Howell Scholarship is awarded on the basis of scholastic ability, leadership potential, and financial need. This scholarship is named for Elmo Howell (1918-2013), a native of Itawamba, MS who received his B.A. degree from the university in 1940 and went on to earn his M.A. & Ph.D. from the Univ. of Florida. Dr. Howell taught English at Jacksonville State College in Alabama, then to Memphis State University, where he taught for the next 26 years, retiring in 1983. In retirement, Dr. Howell wrote on literature and history, publishing three travel guides to the State of Mississippi; and several volumes of poetry.
