“The War at Home: Civilians Experience the Civil War”

The Center for Civil War Research at the University of Mississippi is pleased to announce its 2012 Conference on the Civil War. The theme of this year’s conference is “The War at Home.” Scholars will present research that reimagines the scope and importance of the homefront in the Civil War, ranging from politics and race to courtship and religion.

LeeAnn Whites of the University of Missouri will give the keynote address entitled “Homefront as Battlefield: Reconsidering the Role of Women in the Civil War.” Professor Whites specializes in the areas of gender and sexuality studies. She is the author of The Civil War as a Crisis in Gender: Augusta, Georgia, 1860-1890 and Gender Matters: The Civil War, Reconstruction and the Making of the New South. She most recently edited Occupied Women: Gender, Military Occupation, and the American Civil War.

Panel sessions will be held October 19th and 20th at the Yerby Conference Center at the University of Mississippi. Professor Whites’ keynote presentation will take place in the Overby Center auditorium Friday, October 19th at 4:30 pm. All sessions are free and open to the public.
