Description

A MAJOR IN HISTORY FOR THE B.A. DEGREE consists of a minimum of 33 semester hours and must show a reasonable balance between United States and non-United States courses. All history majors must take History 101 and one other non-U.S. 100-level course (selected from HIS 102, 160, 170 or 180). One additional 100-level course, including either of the U.S. surveys (HIS 105 and 106), may also be applied to the major, but is not required. All history majors must also take one 400-level undergraduate seminar. At least six hours of 300- or 400-level courses must be outside United States history and outside European history since 1648. The following courses meet this last requirement: 311, 343, 344, 345, 346, 347, 348, 349, 350, 352, 353, 354, 355, 356, 357, 369, 370, 373, 374 ,375, 383, 385, 386, 387, 388, 389, 390, 392, 393, 394, 395, 396, 397, 398, 445, 460, 470, and 480. His 490 may also be applied toward this requirement with the approval of the department chair.

Other Academic Requirements: A Minimum grade of C is required in all His courses applied by a student toward either a major or minor in history.

As of fall 2009, a MINOR in History consists of 18 hours of history courses, including at least 9 hours of 300-level or above.

Undergraduate students of sophomore standing or above may enroll in 300-level courses without prerequisites. However, the department strongly recommends that students complete 6 hours of lower-division history courses before enrolling in a 300-level course.
